Walters State Honors Veteran with Chancellor’s Challenge Coin

Wesley Pierce, an associate professor of nursing at Walters State, received the Chancellor’s Commendation for Military Veterans during the college’s spring 2024 inaugural meeting. Dr. Tony Miksa, president of the college, presented the award.

Pierce served in the United State Army from 1992-2008 and was stationed in Oklahoma, Haiti, South Korea, Texas, Georgia and Afghanistan. He served as the Chief Nurse at the combat hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His military commendations include the combat action badge and the bronze star.

The Chancellor’s Commendation for Military Veterans is conferred in the form of a special challenge coin. Challenge coins have a long tradition in all military branches and represent special achievement, excellence, hard work, unit pride and respect. This award was created by Dr. Flora Tydings, chancellor of the Tennessee Board of Regents. Nominees are submitted by college presidents.

“Wesley has served his country, his community and this college with pride and dedication,” said Miksa. “I am honored to present this coin to him on behalf of Chancellor Tydings.”

Pierce coordinates the third semester nursing course, arranging campus lab and simulation experiences and providing clinic instruction at local healthcare facilities. He advocates for continuous improvement and participates on various department and college committees. He is also active in his community, serving as needed at a local hospital. He provides CPR training for faculty and members of the community.

Pierce joined Walters State in 2010.
